Rubaiyat-Fifth ed- Quatrain#43

So when the Angel of the darker drink
At last find you by the river-brink,
And, offering his cup, invite your soul
Forth to your lips to quaff-you shall not shrink.

(Edward Fitzgerald translation-fifth edition)

I always imagined this referred to Iblis or Azrael… Do you know? Beautiful piece of writing.

I presume this angel is more of Fitzgerald’s fancy than of the original: death as angel dispensing bitter draught. Just as the Grim Reaper with a scythe, cutting off some at flower of their youth the reader will assume there is also an angel of darker drink for those who saw in wine something spiritual.
